A Needy Mission Field
Utah is America’s most needy mission field. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is by far the most powerful religious, cultural, political, and economic force in Utah. About 80% of Utah residents are or have been members of the LDS Church -- evangelical Christianity hovers around 2% statewide, but plummets to 0.2% in the Provo metro area.
This saturation of spiritual darkness isn’t without consequences -- Utah leads the nation in the following categories:
- Teen Suicide Rate
- Anti-Depressant Drug Use
- Plastic Surgeons (this article explores the religious reasons of why Utah ranks so high for elective surgery; Utah leads the nation in other elective surgeries unmentioned in this forum.)
- Charitable Giving (here’s why -- full-tithe paying is a requirement for entrance to Temple Weddings, Baptisms, Sealings, etc.)
As dark as these figures might seem, opportunity abounds. Utah is one of the fastest growing states (if not the fastest); it’s also the youngest state by a wide margin. Further, record numbers of people are leaving the LDS church out of distaste and frustration.
Will you help us bring the true gospel of Jesus Christ to this spiritually dark land?
